Solar Storm

My second image of the fantastic solar storm from just over a week ago, March 23, 2023. During this capture the lights were dancing all over the north sky and even shooting straight overhead. Possibly the craziest aurora I’ve ever witnessed. During the next couple years we’ll be reaching what’s called “Solar Maximum” so displays like this may become even more common. Fingers crossed ! View From the Narrows

Another of my Milky Way nightscapes from my trip up to South River, Ontario in July 2022. This image is located on the Eagle Lake narrows. What a great spot for night sky photography. This time of year we have the Milky Way to the south and northern lights to the north. The narrows is a great spot to view and photograph both. Adjacent to Mikisew Provincial Park, this is definitely an underrated corner of Ontario !

Into the Light

The evening of March 23, 2023 proved to be epic ! The lights were dancing all across the world and lasted well into the night. Best aurora I’ve ever witnessed in my life, or at least the modern camera era lol.

Algonquin Boardwalk

Believe it or not this was my first night shooting at Algonquin Park. If you've never been here on a clear moonless sky, you are definitely missing out on a treat ! Summer nights don’t get much better than this. The sky was super clear with the universe on full display .... at times I just forgot about my camera and marvelled at the amazing sight above. I brought my bug spray but the hot summer seemed to have killed most of them off, I don’t even think a single mosquito carried away any of my blood. This is a stacked image of 8 frames captured on my Nikon D600 and 18-35 Nikkor lens. Settings were 18mm F3.5 30” ISO-6400.

Comet NEOWISE

📍 Barrie, Ontario, Canada Last night (July 17, 2020) the conditions were just right for capturing Comet NEOWISE. This is the first time I've ever photographed a comet. After drooling over other's images on social media lately I couldn't wait to head out on a crystal clear evening. Last night was the night ! For those interested, this comet is visible to the northwest after dusk and slowly drifts down to the horizon towards the north as the night goes along. If you're a morning person, you can see it in the northeast sky before sunrise. I believe the comet will be easily visible at these times for the next couple weeks or so and will end up fading as it speeds away from Earth. . Modern DSLR cameras can capture so much detail in the night sky it's incredible. Even with the naked eye I could see the comet easily as well as a bit of it's tail. The key is to get outside of the city where the light pollution drowns out any visibility of it.

Time

My great grandfather visited this same barn back in the early-mid 1900’s. Horse and wagon he made the trip here to draw hay. Those days are gone but the barn still stands as well as the light shining above from the heavens. . This scene is a composite of two different shots at slightly different locations blended together to form this image. The foreground was shot near the end of February 2018 and the night sky was shot this past summer. Both the foreground and background were shot near Restoule, Ontario, Canada. This location is great for viewing and photographing the night sky as the skies are mostly void of any light pollution. With its beautiful landscape nestled deep in the Canadian Shield and proximity to Restoule Provincial Park, it is definitely a must visit area any time of the year. And as we're now in Fall colour viewing season this area is highly recommended. Most people from Southern Ontario end up flocking to Algonquin Provincial Park to view the colours. If you don't want to be stuck in traffic jams then I'd argue a drive along Hwy 522 from Trout Creek west to Port-Loring will leave you super impressed ! Enough of me rambling, go have a look yourself ;)

Muskoka Road 169

Muskoka Road 169 is literally right in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country. Connecting Hwy 11 and 69 to the west while meandering through the Canadian Shield and passing by some famous lakes such as L. Joseph and L. Muskoka. Many famous celebrities own cottages and movies have been filmed in this area. For good reason, it’s definitely an incredibly beautiful part of Ontario during all four seasons. Also the night sky views aren’t too shabby either👌✨ .

Into the Galaxy

In honour of International Dark Sky Week from April 19 - 26, 2020. I'm lucky enough that i only have to drive an hour or so to be under some pretty dark skies. Some people aren't that lucky where they're several hours away. All this man-made progress is great and all but the city lights unfortunately drown out the amazing spectacle a dark sky provides. For anyone who cottages and or camps up north you likely can understand what i'm talking about. In this image I have combined the foreground and night sky from a couple different parts of Ontario: Lake Simcoe, and Restoule in Northern Ontario. The foreground was recently shot last March just before the ice on Lake Simcoe began to thaw. The night sky was captured at Restoule Provincial Park, near North Bay Ontario under it's fabulous dark sky back in the summer of 2019.

Shining Ice

The lights of beautiful downtown Barrie shining bright over a thin layer of ice on Kempenfelt Bay. I shot this a few weeks ago (early Jan 2020) as the bay was just starting to freeze over. We've had a mild January, so it's actually frozen and melted a few times over now. Now the ice is actually thick enough as there's hundreds of fish huts spread out over Lake Simcoe. Cygnus Rising

Here is my latest capture (July 2019) of the Cygnus / Northern Cross region of the Milky Way Galaxy. This image is approx. 24 mins of exposure time that was made possible with my iOptron SkyGuider Pro. The Cygnus region contains multiple nebulae which I feel make it simply gorgeous to admire.

The Milky Way

I was up this past weekend at my parents and had the opportunity to do a little astrophotography on Saturday night. A cold front had gone through earlier in the day and cleared out all the humidity which resulted in crystal clear skies. Something that isn't at all common in July around here. I captured this image in Restoule Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada. If you love the night sky, then this area is a must visit ! Restoule is home to some very dark skies since there is very little population around and the nearest actual city is close to an hour away (North Bay). When I arrived on location I was lucky to meet a couple from Toronto that were there camping and also shooting the stars with their Sony cameras. Night sky photography is definitely growing and such an amazing hobby to be a part of as the possibilities are endless. .
